"The Bagel," David Ignatow

I stopped to pick up the bagel
rolling away in the wind,
annoyed with myself
for having dropped it
as if it were a portent.
Faster and faster it rolled,
with me running after it
bent low, gritting my teeth,
and I found myself doubled over
and rolling down the street
head over heels, one complete somersault
after another like a bagel
and strangely happy with myself.

  1. I really liked this poem. It is really fun and easy and doesn't require deep thought. It is something you can just pick up and enjoy, maybe even have a laugh at. I would not go to all the lengths that he did to get a bagel back though.

  2. The action of the bagel parallels the actions of what the person does to chase it. The rolling of the bagel makes the reader "happy" with himself at the end. They are so intrigued by the motion that they forget that the bagel had went away.

  3. This was a very good peom. Ti is also a very amusing poem because the person went all out to get the bagel. Overall a very good poem.

  4. The poem offers a humorous story relating the speaker chasing something he dropped rolling away, and them him mimicing the rolling after falling. Although it most likely hurt the writer he shows a good sences of humor by realizing at the time it was humorous instead of becoming upset.

  5. "The bagel" uses plain and simple words to portray the humorous events that go on in a day. "Rolling away in the wind" the speaker chases after the bagel frustrated with himself for dropping it. He then fell over "doing somersaults down the street" and instead of becoming enrage he starts to laugh. Sometimes in life people just need to enjoy the little things at laugh at themselves. I can relate to this poem because im always laughing at myself and enjoying the simplest things in the day.

  6. The imagery in this poem is extremely funny. I can picure a person in the city running down a hill for a bagel and suddenly falling and rolling down the hill with the bagel. When the person stops the would have the bagel in reach and be laughing at what fool they have just made of themselves.
