Two shall be born the whole world wide apart,
And speak in different tongues, and pay their debts
In different kinds of coin; and give no heed
Each to the other’s being. And know not
That each might suit the other to a T,
If they were but correctly introduced.
And these, unconsciously, shall bend their steps,
Escaping Spaniards and defying war,
Unerringly toward the same trysting-place,
Albeit they know it not. Until at last
They enter the same door, and suddenly
They meet. And ere they’ve seen each other’s face
They fall into each other’s arms, upon
The Broadway cable car – and this is Fate!
The simple yet elegant diction of "Fate" by Carolyn Wells highlights the fact that two people leading seperate lives can come together. Despite the fast that they speak different languages, "speak in different tongues," pay in different currency "pay their debts In different kinds of coin," and don't think of the other, "give no heed Each to the other’s being," They still find each other overcoming obsticles taht stand in thier way. This represents fate becasue they were meant to find each other despite the fact of growing up sepreatly. This is a very good poem.
ReplyDeleteThe poem "Fate" by Carolyn Wells contains contrasting and plain diction to imply that love is determined by fate. The speaker believes that there lives are already planned out by faith. The "two people leading separate lives" are destined to meet one day and fall in love. I believe life has no plan and fate is what a person makes it. I disagree with the theme of this poem and think life is what you make it.
ReplyDeleteThe poem indicates that fate holds control over who our soul mate is and how we will find them. It has two people born "the whole world wide apart" and speaking "in different tongues," but they are still able to find each other and "fall into each other’s arms." The poem suggests that fate controls the outcome of love.
ReplyDeleteThis poem is wonderful because it shows that there is a special someone out there for everybody. The person may not speak the same language or live near you but the day will come where you meet the person that is right for you and that is "fate." That person may just stumble into your arms on a cable car.
