"Barking," Jim Harrison

The moon comes up.
The moon goes down.
This is to inform you
that I didn’t die young.
Age swept past me
but I caught up.
Spring has begun here and each day
brings new birds up from Mexico.
Yesterday I got a call from the outside
world but I said no in thunder.
I was a dog on a short chain
and now there’s no chain.

  1. The simple yet creative diction in "Barking" by Jim Harrison portrays the aspect of growing older. The poem creates an image of time going by because of how "the moon comes up," then how "the moon goes down." This creates an illusion of time passing because of the many nights going by. The line "Age swept past me," alludes to the fact that the time has gone by fast for the speaker. Overall a very good poem.

  2. "Barking" by Jim Harrison contains calm and peaceful language to allude to the course of life. The speaker's early life was one with hardships and pain, but "he caught up." The speaker now lives a free life of joy with "no chain." This poem is very inspiring to people who have had a hard childhood and gives them hope that life can still be good. This goes along with Jim Harrison's actual life.

  3. The poem expresses the speaker's survival and improvement through his life. The poem indicates a struggle for survival in "this is to inform you I didn't die young." It plants the thought that someone might have thought he might die. After that line the poem expresses his branching out and gaining control of his life. He compares himself to "a dog on a short chain," but then he has no chain at all showing more independence. The poem starts out as a victory over death and shows a positive outlook for his life.
