"For My Daughter," Daivd Ignatow

When I die choose a star
and name it after me
that you may know
I have not abandoned
or forgotten you.
You were such a star to me,
following you through birth
and childhood, my hand
in your hand.

When I die
choose a star and name it
after me so that I may shine
down on you, until you join
me in darkness and silence
together.

  1. This poem shows the passionate love a Father has for his daughter. The strong and passionate diction of this poem implies that a father's spirit will always be with his daughter. The father "chooses a star" that will "shine down" on her watching over her. I truly believe that the bond between a father and child is stronger then anything.

  2. I believe this poem has a clear, powerful message. People never want to be forgotten. Ignatow's simple, basal diction depicts a straightforward tone of people wanting to be remembered. The person in the poem wants to "choose a star and name it" and subsequently "shine down on you, until you join me in darkness and silence forever." The author alludes to the fear of death as all people feel comfortable in their own lives. All people must face death, but no person may truly look forward to the fact of life.

  3. The father has a great amount of love for his daughter and wants her to "name a star" after him. It shows the true love and passion between them and how they will be close even when he dies. The love between a love and daughter should always be this strong and never go away.

  4. The poem shows the father's desire for the daughter to name a star after him when he dies, but this is not for selfish remeberance. He wants the daughter the name it after him so he can "shine down" on her, and remind her that he has "not abadadoned" her. He tells how she has been the a "star" to him in his life, and he only hopes for her well being when his life ends.
